Dan Howells Scholarships
Dan Howells Scholarships are for Scouting volunteers who need financial assistance in order to attend one of our BSA Leave No Trace Level 2 Instructor (formerly called Master Educator) Courses.
The Dan Howells Memorial Fund provides the funds for these scholarships.
(Participants in BSA-hosted Level 2 Instructor courses are excluded from Leave No Trace's general course scholarship fund, so the Dan Howells Scholarship is an opportunity for BSA members to receive support.)
General Information for 2023 Scholarships
- Scholarships are for our BSA Leave No Trace Level 2 Instructor Courses
- Up to three scholarships will be available for 2023 courses.
- The amount of each scholarship will be $150.
- To support courses throughout 2023, there are separate application deadlines:
- April 1 for courses in May-July
- July 1 for courses in August-December
- Applicants will be notified of their status within 2 weeks after the application deadlines.
More Information
- Applications may be submitted at any time, but they are only reviewed/considered immediately after each application deadline.
- Applicants are not required to register for their course before applying for scholarship.
- The scholarship is paid to the recipient on successful completion on the course.

Key Selection Criteria
- Financial Need
Scholarships are for Scouting volunteers who could not otherwise afford to attend one of our Level 2 Instructor Courses. - Dan's Legacy: BSA members passionate about teaching Leave No Trace to scouts & scouters.
For instance:- Completed a Leave No Trace Trainer course and wants to be more involved.
- Serving as Council Outdoor Ethics Advocate.
- Support for Outdoor Ethics in BSA outdoor programs:
"A major goal for our BSA Leave No Trace Level 2 Instructor courses is to graduate effective and active Leave No Trace Level 2 Instructors who will return to their home council and conduct the key Leave No Trace Level 1 Instructor courses needed to support their unit, district and council outdoor programs."
