Ideas and Questions (posted to the Chat)

  • Many Questions about Short-Term Camp - Answered in Video or referred to Short-Term Camp Resources.
  • Leave No Trace hang tag = pot scraper (multiple uses) [Dave O'Leary]
  • Cannot stand to not have fresh veggies so make a seasoned kale salad that can be dehydrated ahead of time, then cold-soaked 20 minutes before lunch. Can eat as-is or add a shelf-stable pack of chicken or salmon. Have not done in a group, but could as one of my batches makes several. Handy for backpacking though. [Terri Jackson]
  • I emphasize that following Leave No Trace principles with meals leads to less work (time and effort) for participants. [Gary Custis]
  • Our BALOO Catering staff always uses thermometers or temp dials on the cooking equipment. [Hal Smith]
  • Any thoughts on use of foil/disposable bags, and fossil fuel (stoves) as bigger issues of sustainability beyond localized Leave No Trace values? I believe Philmont has advocated away from meal in a bag due to waste disposal. [Matt Hamel] - (Answered in Video)
  • You can also compare your footprint on the trail vs. your footprint if you stayed at home. Think of all the energy you're saving by not showering! [Jack Chicken]
